The Gospel of John
These are notes from the current LILOC home Bible study
John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
Lessons: The Word was God; the word was made flesh (John 1:1,14); Jesus was the Word made flesh (Revelation 19:11-13), and thus was God.
Jesus Is the Beginning -- John 1:1,14; Colossians 1:14-16, Revelation 1:8
John 1:2 "The same was in the beginning with God."
Lessons: Jesus was the beginning of the creation of God (Revelation 3:14), and from Him [Jesus] all things were created.
Jesus was the Son of God long before he was conceived in the womb of Mary (Hebrews 7:1-3, JN 1:30)
John 1:3 "All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made."
Lessons:
Jesus [the Word of God] Created the world (Gen. 1:1, Col. 1:14-16) If he made all things, He can fix all things! He can heal spiritually (Luke 8:2); he can restore the body (Luke 7:21), and he can bless financially (Matthew 6:33, Luke 9:12-17)
John 1:4 "In Him was Life; and the Life was the LIGHT of men."
Lessons: The Breath of Jesus was the Life of Adam (Gen. 2:7-9) The Breath of Jesus was the Life of the Apostles (John 20:22) His Breath is the Light
Everywhere he went he brought life and the life that he brought was illuminating and full of light. Because of the life he gave, it led men and women to the truth of God's glory!
When Lazarus was risen it was by the breath of Life! When people saw this miracle it was their Light and it caused them to worship God!
John 1:5 "And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not."
Lessons:
Before God created the earth, everything was covered in darkness. When He spoke the light into existence, the darkness did not understand the Light -- it did not comprehend how energy could come from emptiness and void existence. (Gen. 1:3-4)
In conjunction with this foundational truth, when Jesus Christ was to be born into the world, the world was full of corruption and darkness. God spoke and formed Jesus Christ in the womb of a virgin, and thus Light was born, once again, in the midst of darkness. He, quintessentially, was born into a world void of the knowledge of God -- Thus, all creation stood in awe at the birth of One so holy, perfect, and full of Light!
Even Satan could not comprehend that Light was born in the dark kingdom of which he reigned. Thus he said, "If you are the Son of God." He questioned whether or not Jesus was God come in the flesh and could not believe that the Creator had entered the domain of his creation and had become a man himself.
John 1:6 "There was a man sent from God whose name was John."
Lesson:
God-sent men are the best! They are what the world needs to heal the cancers of deception. Some people preach God's word, but haven't been sent, and they only increase the cancer. John was a pure example -- he portrays the potential of a God-sent man.
The Bible teaches us that if a man is truly sent by God that he will speak for the glorification of God. He will seek to benefit God's kingdom and not his own... John 7:18 He will minister, and will not seek to be minister unto... Mark 10:45
John's name comes from the Hebrew language, which means, "God is gracious." It is indeed and act of God's grace to send men and women to prepare and unprepared soul for the coming of the LORD!
John 1:7 "The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the LIGHT, that all men through him might believe."
Lesson:
Once again, John seeks to glorify God. He comes to confirm that Jesus is indeed the LAMB of God! This is our calling -- we are to testify of God's word and His Light!
John was channel through which the Holy Spirit could reconcile man with his God. Are you being a conduit of testimony and confirmation?
John 1:8 "He was not the LIGHT, but was sent to bear witness of that LIGHT."
Lesson: It is of absolute necessity that we admit that we are not the LIGHT -- We are "a" light, but not THE LIGHT! Matthew 5:16 Remember that, "in Him was life, and the life is the LIGHT of men." John 1:4 Jesus is the LIGHT of all men...
Keep all things in godly order, for it is God that shines brightly in the midst of darkness. Be humble and bear witness to Christ... John 12:46
John 1:9 "That was the true LIGHT, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world."
There is a vast contrast between light bulbs and the stars; there is a great gulf and gap of difference between the flicker of a candle and the sun! Jesus is the TRUE LIGHT! He's the only Light... Praise His name...
Jesus Christ gave light to his New Testament apostles and Old Testament prophets. He gave illumination to Moses and gave wisdom to Daniel Not only so, but Christ enlightens every man -- Yes, you! Yes, he gave understanding to scientists, doctors, etc... He lightens every man that comes into the world! John 12:46
John 1:10 "He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew Him not."
Though in position Christ is and was, "high above the heavens" (Hebrews 7:26), He chose to dwell "in" the world. Not only did he dwell in the world, but he became incarnate in the world. He became one with a fallen world to redeem fallen humanity. Jesus was in the world to save the world.
He was in the world, but not worldy! He was the light of the world! He was the salt of the earth...
The scripture declares that he "was made in the likeness of men: and being found in fashion as a man, he became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross." (Philippians 2:7-8). God didn't come to us as a stranger nor did he appear as an elevated spiritual being; He came as a human being. He became one of us to show us the way...He didn't send an angel, "He" was in the world."
When was the last time you got on someone else's level to help bring them to Christ? How often do you humble yourslef for the salvation of others? Jesus became what He was not, to help us become as He is... We need the mind of Christ! There's a difference between being in the world, and being incarnate with your world.
When you see the mass animals of the serenghetti; the innumberable creatures of the sea; and the billions of species that have gone unnoticed, we realize the awesomeness of God's world! When we measure how high an aircraft can fly and how much higher space craft can climb, this is mind boggling. Yet think of God's creation; no one can measure how much further we can go in space, it's because space infinite; there is no limit; there is not ending point. We haven't begun to explore all of God's universe!
Now comapre the magnitude of the heights. Think about how many creatures may be found on the way up; think about the large oceans that may simply appear as lakes on the way up -- how astronomical are these figures...They are mind debunking, God's earth is amazing! Not just think about how small you are.
Jesus did it! The one that can open blind eyes, makes mountains. The one that raised the dead, created birds, insects, and men! The world was made by Him (Colossians 1:15) God makes gold! He doesn't buy it, He makes it! He made the worlds -- more worlds than this one -- Hebrews 1:2
Now that we have taken a glance at the magnitude of God's power in creation, let us analyze the size of man. The average man is about 5 feet 9 inches. The average weight is about 160 lbs. With these simple figures, it is not hard to figure out that a man can fit in a hole as little as 4 feet wide and 6 feet deep.
Man has a big mind, but a small frame. Man has control, but a short life. Man is bright, but his light dims. Man has pride, but is easily humbled. Man has money, but is easily broke.
God has given men the power of choice -- a gift that no other being has been given. We have the power to do good or the power to do evil; however, the problem is that man is very frail and weak. All of creation rejoiced at the coming of Jesus, but men frowned. The mountains skipped like rams, and the little hills like lambs, but men sat and murmured.
Men knew Him not! They didn't recognize God's visitation. The missed the opportunity for God's blessing! They were still dreaming about the Messiah, but the Messiah had come! Don't miss out on your chance with the Messiah! Clinch your victory in Jesus Christ!
